In this provocative book, sixteen of Minnesota's best writers provide a range of perspectives on what it is like to live as a person of color in Minnesota. They give readers a splendid gift: the gift of touching another human being's inner reality, behind masks and veils and politeness. They bring us generously into experiences that we must understand if we are to come together in real relationships.

Minnesota communities struggle with some of the nation's worst racial disparities. As its authors confront and consider the realities that lie beneath the numbers, this book provides an important tool to those who want to be part of closing those gaps.

Review
“Sun Yung Shin has brought together a collection of passionate literary warriors whose fierceness is equaled and at times surpassed only by their love of community, and of us, the people for whom they speak. The unburdening that takes place here is specific and yet representative. Either way it is heavy. Deep. You will not be able to read this book without changing. Minnesota will never be the same.”—Alexs Pate, author and president, Innocent Technologies, LLC

“This is the northern voice on race—multiple perspectives and divergent experiences, but a common call for change on one of the most pressing issues of our time. Brave and poignant, full of true grit and wisdom, A Good Time for the Truth is a compelling challenge to us all.”—Anton Treuer, author of Everything You Wanted to Know about Indians but Were Afraid to Ask

“A Good Time for the Truth evokes every emotion, from sudden bursts of laughter to soul-wrenching sadness at what could and should have been. The writers show how America has failed to deliver on its promise, while they simultaneously paint a vision of our capacity to thrive when the color of our skin is no longer the gatekeeper into the garden of American Dreams.”—Sia Her, executive director, Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans

“These essays fuel our imaginations, encourage us to reflect on our values, and challenge our biases. The authors’ lived experiences strike a deep chord, resonating with current events and sounding a clarion call to advancing racial justice!”—Luz Maria Frias, attorney and race equity strategist

“What is a true Minnesotan? In the land still defined by Lake Wobegon, the Vikings, Snoopy, and Mary Tyler Moore, the ideas of who we are have still not caught up to the realities, not by a long shot. This book helps to narrow that gap.”—Wing Young Huie, author of Frogtown and The University Avenue Project

Wonderful book!!
By Amazon Customer
This is an excellent book and should be required reading for all white Minnesotans. If we listened more to each other stories we would understand better. This is a great collection of essays from a number of different Minnesotans or from people who have lived in Minnesota. I am going to encourage my local library to get it.

Good time for truth, indeed!

Powerful, vital stories revealing the pain imposed by the "white" supremacist system and widespread popular mindset on everyone not defined as "white."

About the Author
Michele Davidson [COPY TO COME for Michele Davidson] Marcia L. London Marcia L. London has been able to combine her two greatest passions by being both a nurse caring for children and families and a teacher for almost 35 years. She received her B.S.N. and school nurse certificate from Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, New York. After graduation, she began her nursing career as a pediatric nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City then moved to Pittsburgh, where she began her teaching career. Mrs. London accepted a faculty position at Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital Affiliate Program and received her M.S.N. in pediatrics as a clinical nurse specialist from the University of Pittsburgh. Mrs. London began teaching at Beth-El School of Nursing and Health Science in 1974 after opening the first intensive care nursery at Memorial Hospital of Colorado Springs. She has served in many administrative and faculty positions at Beth-El, including coordinator for nursing care of children for 32 years. Mrs. London maintains her clinical skills working in an urgent care and after-hours clinic and doing undergraduate pediatric clinical supervision. She obtained her postmaster's neonatal nurse practitioner certificate in 1983 and subsequently developed the neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) program and the master's NNP program at Beth-El. She is active nationally in neonatal nursing and was involved in the development of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Educational Program Guidelines. She has contributed 5 chapters to various neonatal nursing texts. Mrs. London is active in nurse practitioner education in general. She was involved in the revision of the Core Competency for NursePractitioners and Curriculum Guidelines for Nurse Practitioner Education, as a member of the Education Committee of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties and participated as part of the Core Competency Validation Expert Panel. Mrs. London has also pursued her interest in college student learning by taking doctoral classes in higher education administration and adult learning at the University of Denver in Colorado. She feels fortunate to be involved in the education of her future colleagues. Her teaching philosophy is that, with support, students can achieve more than they may initially believe they are capable of achieving. Mrs. London and her husband have two sons and one dog (Reilly, daughter by proxy). Her two sons, Craig and Matthew, are involved in computer informatics, and media arts and animation and are more than willing to give Mom helpful hints. Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig received her B.S. from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. After graduation, she worked as a pediatric nurse before joining the U.S. Air Force. After completing her tour of duty, Dr. Ladewig relocated at Florida, where she accepted a faculty position at Florida State University. There she embraced teaching as her calling. Over the years, she taught at several schools of nursing while earning her M.S.N. in maternal-newborn nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and her Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Denver in Colorado. In addition, she became a women's health nurse practitioner and maintained a part-time clinical practice. In 1988 Dr. Ladewig became the first director of the nursingprogram at Regis College in Denver and., in 1991, when the college became Regis University, she became dean of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions. Under her guidance, the Department of Nursing has added a graduate program and the School has added three departments: the Department of Physical Therapy, the Department of Health Services Administration and Management, and the Department of Health Care Ethics. Dr. Ladewig feels that teaching others to be excellent, caring nurses gives her the best of all worlds because it keeps her in touch with the profession she loves and enables her to help shape the future of the nursing profession. When not at work or writing textbooks, Pat and her husband, Tim, enjoy skiing, baseball games, and traveling. However their greatest pleasure comes from their family: son Ryan, his wife, Amanda, and grandson Reed; and son, Erik, his wife Kedri, and granddaughter Emma.

Review
The advent of the personal computer has made the study of electricity an electrical components all the more important. Today, an estimated 3 out of 5 homes have implemented computer systems, and we rely on these instruments in all facets of our daily lives. Accordingly, a true understanding of this topic is necessary for students pursuing science and computer-related degree certification. And that's just where "Electric Motor" comes into play: In this text students of the discipline will find a wealth of information about all kinds of electric motors and the way that they have been applied to various industries world-wide. Beaty and Kirtley have done an exemplary job in surveying the subject and then creating a manual that is logical and relatively easy to read. In the course of their analysis, the authors discuss the kinds of electrical motors in use today, the ways in which they function, tests to conduct to insure best performance, and ways that motors are designed for different applications. Simply, "Electric Motor" covers the full spectrum in terms of analyzing the components that drive so many different kinds of systems -- from the work place to the home office, and everything between. Seasoned technicians and under-graduate students alike will be served equally well by this handbook as it offers real insight into the ways the engines of the world turn. . .

In short, "Electric Motor" should be required reading in all training courses that explore these subjects. Further recommended as a general reference text for both college and public sector libraries. .

Needs significant revision
By C. G. Holt
This book does a descent job in providing an overview of many different motor types used in industry. However, I do believe the title is somewhat misleading and should be changed. Most readers would assume a "Handbook" would provide more practical information about the subject for direct industry application. In my opinion, this book does not address a "Handbook" type of issue. It does however offer significant detail in electrical design theory of differing motors. Even in theory it falls short. I only wish the authors would have been more considerate of their readers by including all nomenclature definitions. I found what was presented partially helpful since most equations didn't define the variables. I had to guess, assume and use other references to fully understand variables of most of the equations. The book appears to have been compiled too quickly in order to meet a press deadline. This book would become a good reference for designers if a second edition is published correcting (1) the title - then it would be a first edition of another book, and (2) nomenclature definition.

A Completely Misleading Title
By Donald Carlson
I am a degreed electrical engineer with 7 years of experience in the electric motor industry. Even I couldn't understand this book. Extensive portions of the book state equations using calculus. There is little explaination of the equations. The book appears to be a collection of advanced technical papers previously written for IEEE academic symposiums. Unless you are very comfortable with calculus and already know how to design electric motors, this book will be unintelligable. This collection of advanced academic papers demonstrates the authors command of the discipline and got him published. It was not written to educate the reader. A collection of academic papers does not constitute a handbook. I have a more than mild suspicion the five star review by an earlier "reader" may be a ringer.

Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best... and Learn from the Worst, by Robert I. Sutton

Now with a new chapter that focuses on what great bosses really do. Dr. Sutton reveals new insights that he's learned since the writing of Good Boss, Bad Boss. Sutton adds revelatory thoughts about such legendary bosses as Ed Catmull, Steve Jobs, A.G. Lafley, and many more, and how you can implement their techniques.
If you are a boss who wants to do great work, what can you do about it? Good Boss, Bad Boss is devoted to answering that question. Stanford Professor Robert Sutton weaves together the best psychological and management research with compelling stories and cases to reveal the mindset and moves of the best (and worst) bosses. This book was inspired by the deluge of emails, research, phone calls, and conversations that Dr. Sutton experienced after publishing his blockbuster bestseller The No Asshole Rule. He realized that most of these stories and studies swirled around a central figure in every workplace: THE BOSS. These heart-breaking, inspiring, and sometimes funny stories taught Sutton that most bosses - and their followers - wanted a lot more than just a jerk-free workplace. They aspired to become (or work for) an all-around great boss, somebody with the skill and grit to inspire superior work, commitment, and dignity among their charges.
As Dr. Sutton digs into the nitty-gritty of what the best (and worst) bosses do, a theme runs throughout Good Boss, Bad Boss - which brings together the diverse lessons and is a hallmark of great bosses: They work doggedly to "stay in tune" with how their followers (and superiors, peers, and customers too) react to what they say and do. The best bosses are acutely aware that their success depends on having the self-awareness to control their moods and moves, to accurately interpret their impact on others, and to make adjustments on the fly that continuously spark effort, dignity, and pride among their people.

From Publishers Weekly
Want to be a better boss? Unaware that you're a terrible one? Sutton (The No Asshole Rule) is here to help. The cost of callous and cruel superiors is considerable: employees with an abusive boss are more likely to work slowly, make deliberate errors, and even suffer heart attacks. With examples from such diverse workplaces as Pixar and Anchor Steam brewery, Sutton reveals how the best bosses take diverse and intertwined steps to create effective and humane workplaces, and offers tips on taking control, getting and giving credit appropriately, taking responsibility, staying in tune with employees, and squelching your potential inner jerk. Using real-life examples and insight gleaned from 30 years of experience as a manager, Sutton teaches his readers to become the boss employees enthusiastically want to work for. This entertaining, satisfying guide is a wakeup call for bosses everywhere--and a survival guide for those who work for them. (Sept.) (c)

Review
This book is the personal coach that every boss deserves: warm, smart, and freakishly good at translating scientific reserach into practical tips that will help keep you at the top of your game.―Chip & Dan Heath, authors of Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard

I loved this book - immediately my favorite business book. There are so many great principles and ideas to live up to, backed up by real data - it should be every boss' responsibility to read and understand it.―John Lilly, CEO of Mozilla Corporation, producer of the Firefox web browser

Good Boss, Bad Boss does a wonderful job of challenging conventional wisdom while outlining a clear and compelling rationale for thinking differently. From Sutton's useful steps for getting "in tune" with what it feels like to work for you, to evidence that eliminating the negative is more powerful than accentuating the positive, to the importance of demonstrating confidence with the admission that you're not always right. Good Boss, Bad Boss teaches the art and the science of practical leadership for the 21st century. I would consider it a must-read for anyone looking to improve their impact and accelerate their desired outcomes.―Brad Smith, CEO of Intuit

We are damned lucky to have Bob Sutton. While his every word is backed up by significant research, he writes in simple sentences that make enormous sense. Typical in this book, Sutton's little chart in Chapter 3, 'Smart Versus Wise Bosses,' is worth, all by itself, 100 times the price of admission. Good Boss, Bad Boss is as good as it gets.―Tom Peters, author of The Little Big Things and co-author of In Search of Excellence

It has been damn near impossible to find consistently good and objective insight and analysis from business thought leaders. But Robert I. Sutton, a professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford and the Stanford Institute of Design (where we have overlapped), is an exception. His new book, out now, is his best to date. Good Boss, Bad Boss is food for thought for managers and leaders in organizations large and small. It is packed with insight, lists of "how to" suggestions, and questions for bosses to ask themselves.―Reuters

Great book about good and bad bosses
By NYC Reader
Bob Sutton's latest book is a great read, and is filled with vivid examples of leaders who do things right, or wrong. Sutton is a talented story teller, and brings bosses to life in his descriptions of real life executives and managers, and also draws on his deep knowledge of psychology to explain, in clear terms, why the actions of bosses are so impactful, for better or for worse, on the people who work for them. This book does what so few management and leadership books are able to- it balances "showing" through real world stories with "telling" through established theories of social psychology. Anyone who has a boss, or is a boss, will benefit from reading this book.

Great Leadership Book
By P. Klebahn
Good Boss Bad Boss is a great book on leadership.

I have read almost all of Professor Sutton's books and I find his ability to find real world examples of just about any leadership style or challenge amazing. This book is no exception. Sutton talks about the leadership theory, but balances it with his shrewd and pragmatic lens on the real world. Sutton calls it like he sees it-no apologies. I enjoy the mixture of theory and reality. Sutton sees leadership as a craft; something personal.

This book is filled with great real world examples of leadership in many styles. I found it thought provoking, as I was able to think about how any one of these styles might suit me or my organization.

A great book and author.

Magnets and septic tanks
By Robert Morris
However defined, a "boss" by nature is given or somehow obtains at least some degree of control of and - yes - responsibility for others, for better or worse. Its connotations have become so diverse that the term's meaning is almost entirely determined by the person who invokes it. The inmates of a prison, for example, do not have the same meaning in mind when referring to a guard they fear as do fans of Bruce Springsteen when describing someone they revere. In the business world, however, everyone agrees that having a "good boss" is highly preferable to having a "bad boss." Now and for the first time insofar as I know, Robert Sutton has written a book in which all of the attention is devoted to a rigorous examination of these two types.

Having read and then reviewed most of Sutton's previous books, I was not surprised to find so much valuable material (i.e. information and especially counsel) in his latest book. He also includes contributions from a diverse group of people who share their own experiences, opinions and suggestions. They include Michael McCain ("A Recipe for an Effective Apology," Pages 64-65), Margie Mauldin (the "Tape Method" to manage anger, Pages 92-93), Matthew May (a "dirty trick" to demonstrate how an organizational hierarchy can enable bad decisions, Pages 131-132), Bonny Warner-Simi (how to support and protect direct-reports by improving their performance evaluation process, Pages 165-166), and Paul Levy (how to support and protect those whom Jody Heymann characterizes - in Profit at the Bottom of the Ladder: Creating Value by Investing in Your Workforce -- as "the least-advantaged employees," Pages 195-196).

These and other contributions supplement those that Sutton includes as he delivers what the book's subtitle promises: an explanation of how to be the best (or at least a much better) boss by learning from real-world bosses who lack character and/or competence. "I use the word `boss' rather than `leader,' `manager,' or `supervisor' (although all are bosses) because it implies an authority figure that has direct and frequent contact with subordinates - and who is responsible for personally directing and evaluating their work." This book focuses on the differences between the best and worst bosses "when performing essential chores like taking charge, making wise decisions, turning talk into action, and doing their dirty work (i.e. work that is unpleasant but necessary but illegal, immoral, or unethical).

Sutton duly acknowledges that many of the ideas in this book are shaped by two books he co-authored with Jeffrey Pfeffer, The Knowing-Doing Gap and, more recently, Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths, and Total Nonsense. (Note: I highly recommend those as well as Pfeffer's latest book, Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't.) Readers will especially appreciate how Sutton presents his material. He makes skillful use of bold face, italics, brackets, and bullet points as well as sequences of separate but related ideas. For example:

"What the Best Bosses Do": Seven attributes (Pages 47-64)
"Tricks for Taking Charge": He identifies nine (Pages 68-70)
"The Attitude of Wisdom": Smart Bosses and Wise Bosses (Page 73)
"Participation Traps": He identifies and discusses three (Pages 88-91)
"Other Smart People's Tricks": He identifies nine (Pages 113-122)

As is also true in all of his previously published books and articles, Sutton identifies the "what" and explains the "why" of a good or bad business decision or initiative, then focuses most of his attention on how to do what must be done while avoiding (or repairing) the damage of what should not be done. Congratulations to Robert Sutton on a brilliant achievement. Bravo!

The North American Indian: The Complete Portfolios, by Edward Sheriff Curtis

In search of a lost time: The complete portfolios by Edward S. Curtis on Native Americans   At the turn of the 20th century, the American photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868–1952) started on his 30-year project to produce a monumental study of North American Indians. Using an approach that was both artistically and scientifically ambitious, he recorded, in words and pictures, the traces of the traditional Indian way of life that was already beginning to die out.

With tireless personal commitment Curtis visited 80 American Indian tribes from the Mexican border to the Bering Strait, gaining their confidence through his patience and sensitivity. His work was printed in 20 volumes between 1907 and 1930 as The North American Indian, but with only 272 copies, originals became extremely rare.

This book gathers Curtis’ entire American Indian portfolio into one publication, offering renewed access to and appreciation of his extraordinary achievement, which is as much a precious historical document as a triumph of the photographic form.   About the Series:
Bibliotheca Universalis — Compact cultural companions celebrating the eclectic TASCHEN universe at an unbeatable, democratic price!
Since we started our work as cultural archaeologists in 1980, the name TASCHEN has become synonymous with accessible, open-minded publishing. Bibliotheca Universalis brings together nearly 100 of our all-time favorite titles in a neat new format so you can curate your own affordable library of art, anthropology, and aphrodisia.

Great compendium, tiny pictures
By Karina Listorti
Really great compendium with lots of quality pictures from the original twenty volumes, but... I believe the book is too small (actually pocket size), some of the pictures are just thumbnails. I was expecting full page pics, a little bit disappointing.

Poor reproduction quality
By Amazon Customer
While I am pleased to see so many of Curtis's images in a single book, I bought this with the hope of sketching some of the portraits. There is hardly any contrast and hardly any detail. Everything is soft and dark. I can't see enough detail to draw from. I would have happily paid more for better quality images. It is a disappointing purchase.

I own many Curtis books and I must admit, I don't yet have this one. However, I'm not sure I ever will. People- What is wanted here are copies of this mans wonderful photographs and this size book just can't possibly do this art justice. I won't buy it and don't suggest you do either.
