Excellent study guide!

The No-Nonsense Series of books is an excellent way to prepare for the Ham License Exams - I read the technician and the general license study guides and then practiced a lot on HamStudy.org, both single sections and practice exams, and passed my technician and my general license exams with flying colors. Make no mistake about it: this is not an in-depth technical manual, nor does it claim to be, it is a study guide for the tests only.
But Romanchik puts the questions in a very easy to follow prose and in context, which helps enormously to both understand and remember the material. Moreover, this guide shines in explaining formulae in a way that makes working with them easy.

By contrast, the ARRL books are overwhelming with details, especially for beginners, and much better suited as reference works. And though Gordon West produces an excellent series of study guides, I found his style too chatty, and I never could sit down and read his book cover to cover. Romanchik's direct approach, on the other hand, worked well for me.

All in all I would highly recommend the No-Nonsense Study Guides for getting your amateur license. And remember: the license is only the first step, afterwards it is important to find a nice group of hams to join, learn from and share with!

Disappointing

The explanations in this book are no more detailed or useful than what you can fin for free on the Internet or in an app. I expected more details and teaching around the questions, not just a a couple sentences which don't really provide enough education. If you want teaching, buy the AARL book. If you just want a minimal explanation of the question, you can skip this book and just use the hamstudy.org flashcards with the simple explanations on the back.

Good for passing, light on theory

So after you pass your Technician Class exam you may think about taking the General Class exam, since that license opens up a great portion of the HF bands (you know, what grandma and grandpa called "shortwave radio"). This book zeroes-in on the questions and answers using a textbook-like narrative, but is kind of light on the theory. But by studying this book and committing the answers to memory, you'll have a good chance of passing, which is exactly the purpose of this book. However, after you pass, you may want to get a different book to fill in the blanks and get the big picture: there's more to power supplies than filter networks, bleeding resistors, and lightweight inductors and capacitors to smooth out the pulses (these are all approximate answers to General exam questions). To delve in deeper, I recommend the The ARRL General Class License Manual (emphasis on Manual). Of course, this book is about 4X longer and it would be a bear to study from unless you want to commit six months to the effort.

As always, pick your VE location and date first, then work backwards to see how long you need to study. This hard deadline will help motivate you and keep you on track. I spent about 20 minutes a day (about 60 minutes on Sat/Sun) for 30 days reading and re-reading the book, about twice as long as I spent on the Technician exam since the material is far more obscure and disconnected (although it builds on the Technician material). Full-wave rectifier? Control grid? Maximum deviation of an oscillator? Varicode? PM? Obscure indeed. But that's why you need a study guide.

Packs a punch....

I should begin by saying this novel by Jenny Offill is not the kind of fare I would normally read and I only picked it up at the insistent urging of several friends. The average reader might categorize this short (160 pages) novel as very 'literary' or artsy in format, but bear with me for a few moments...

This is the story (in my opinion, at least) of a woman on the verge of a breakdown. We never know her name for she only ever refers to herself as "the wife." The story is presented to us as a series of what might be seen as journal entries, but I came to see them as just plain thoughts. Her thoughts as they popped into her head. So we only see things from her point of view. We learn that she is a college professor, married with one child ("the girl"), lives in New York and is very, very unfulfilled in her life.

Then, a marital crisis.

The book is easily read in one afternoon. As I noted at the start of this review, this format (random thoughts) is not my normal chosen fare in books. Yet I found myself captivated. This was a woman in crisis. She isn't entirely sympathetic (who amongst us is perfect?), but neither is she to blame. Like so many wives and mothers, she is questioning the direction her life took (although she would lay down her life for her child). Because it is written in 'thought format' the book feels, at first, disjointed. But as I kept reading it occurred to me that my own thoughts are often disjointed in the same manner. I was slipping into her head, if that makes sense.

Ultimately, the end of the book provides no answers to these dilemmas we face. But the book itself is so chock-full of snippets of truth that I find I must now go back and re-read the book, this time with a notebook and pen at hand. While I've never considered myself a fan of edgy, artsy (not a real word, I know) literary fiction, this book surprised me. I'm impressed.

Is That All There Is?

A rare find, a book like this. You start reading the book, and find short sentences and paragraphs, but the more you keep reading, It all begins to make sense. Sparse is not the right word, but this is a book of 192 pages, of observations and small spaces in time

What we know a woman is narrating the book, as we read along,we can start to see this woman and the man she meets in our mind's eye. We observe the places and people she talks about. The man and woman meet, no names are ever mentioned, they marry, purchase a home, have a child, and go through their days as a couple with a child. The child takes all the wife's time, she cries a lot, but stops crying when brought to the pharmacy store down the street. The child grows, the marriage grows, upsets in the marriage, as life moves on.

The wife plans a party, the child is excited, the people come, the child mingles for a bit, and then says "party over, go home". This is their life, the woman, the man the child. This is a simple story, no excess, each word has meaning in its placement. I was sad when the book ended, 'Is that all there is?'

Very interesting read. It's different. You won't realize you are getting it and into it...until you get it and are into it! You can look up other reviews if you want to know what it's about. I'll just tell you it's unique, engaging, quick, and readable.

Don't buy the Deluxe Colletor Set

I'm really disappointed.

No need to spend any words on the book. It's a classic.

But I'm still trying to figure where's the deluxe finish or the collector's level in this pityful set that I've just received. To make it simple, it is not the one in the product pictures. The mask seems to be one of those that kids get for free in birthday parties. It is made of a cheap plastic, full of stickers in the inside. Besides that, you can easily notice how it was poorly handcut, probably with common scissors and by someone that don't have steady hands. It also comes with a hanging tab that, guess what, it wasn't shown in product pictures.

The box is also not the one in the pictures. A cheap cellophane completely loose and unglued at the time it arrived. The box was full of smashed edges. Well, not just the edges, it was all smashed. Even the book could have a better quality paper.

There's anything deluxe in this set, and anything for a collector. It was cheap, indeed, but customers deserve to know what they are buying, no matter what price they are paying. If I knew, I would have bought any other hardcover version of the product.

Right now, I feel deceived and disappointed. Dont buy this, go for any other version.

Great book. Horrid Mask. Flimsy packaging.

I pre-ordered this set months ago, as I was excited that such a collection would be available before I had to set up a V for Vendetta Display in November.

The good, the book is great, but you can buy a comparable edition for a few dollars less on Amazon by itself. I repeat the book is great 5 stars, too good for this set.

The mask is a flimsy thin plastic number complete with hanging tab. Garbage. I will return and buy the deluxe rubies mask, it has to be better than this one. The worst part, the packaging. It is so flimsy my first set was dented, and my replacement set was worse, the cellophane tearing out of the front. The box looks completely different than what is shown here. I will upload images to show what I mean. What a waste of potential.

If you don't care about the quality of the mask or the condition of the box you may like this.

You do get a book and mask set, however it's not the same one as pictured. The book its self is wonderful, the packaging was fine, but the mask was an absolute piece of crap. Its one of those cheap party masks you can pick up at the $1 store. Considering the set costs less than the book itself, I'm not really worried about the crappy mask that legit got tossed in the trash with the box it came in. 5 stars to Alan Moore for an awesome book and 1 star to Amazon for crappy advertisement of this product.

If your marriage needs help, emergency help, this is it.

My wife and I survived an affair - I was the 'victim' but in a way there can be no victims in an affair. Both of you must be aware of each others needs and become professionals at meeting them better than anyone else can. I know what it is like to feel betrayed - I survived it and my marriage is fortified for having had the experience. I have read the negative reviews here on this book, and I must tell you that I understand their frustration and they are due their pain and anger, but not at this book, it's authors or the power it has to bring your life back to a place where you can live it with your spouse. I never thought I'd find an ordinary world again, but with counseling, understanding, knowledge and the teachings of Dr. Harley (see his other books too!) I did, my wife did, and we hold each other closer than we ever have before. I'm sorry there is a reason for you to look into this book, but have hope - you will feel better when you learn what it teaches you about your spouse's needs and how a marriage must function to maintain those needs. The book also will NOT make the cheating spouse feel like a criminal, and posts many insights from their point of view. This is something those of us cheated ON will perhaps not have much sympathy for but there is A LOT for us to learn from it. The affair is a drug in the cheater's blood - they are prisoners in a cycle that people have fallen victim to since marriage began. They will eventually see the light, but they must do this with their own eyes. By following Harley's advice you can create the best environment for this.

Highly recommended!

I suvived my ordeal by following the advice in Dr. Harley's book as well as on his web site [...] I had an affair several months ago. I was totally confused, devastated, depressed, and thought about suicide. I tried looking for help but most people are not sympathetic toward the wayward spouse. I learned about Dr. Harley and was comforted to know that he understands the wayward spouse's feeling and point of view. I followed his advice regarding total separation from my lover valuable- it was the hardest thing in the world to do- I loved him and the thought of never communicating with him devastated me. But I am so glad in retrospect that I lived throught the withdrawel. I now have a better relationship with my husband, and after three months of not communicating with my lover, I can now see the affiar for the mistake that it was. I am very grateful to Dr. Harley- his iron-clad policy regarding total separation with my lover was absolutely right!

I highly recommend this book especailly if, like myself, you are having an affair and would like advice on what to do next. I understand your pain and struggle. Trust me, buy this book, or at least go to his website and read the articles. You might think that total separtion from your lover is impossible. Trust me, the pain was excruciating, but it was it. I saved my marriage and my life. And you can save yours.

A great roadmap to return from hell

Surviving an Affair is the description of a trip from how a seemingly `OK' marriage can deteriorate to a full-blown affair, and it provides a detailed roadmap of how to survive the affair and eventually recover, hopefully with the renewal of the marriage. This book encompasses the behavioral approaches that Dr. Harley and Dr. Chalmers have successfully used to save marriages, and applies them directly to the affair. The elements that are covered in some of Dr. Harley's other works (`Give and Take' and `Love Busters') are included here. This book presents a balanced viewpoint of the betrayer's view as well as the betrayed (and even presents the view of the other man/woman).
If you're in an affair, either as the betrayed spouse or the betrayer; I strongly recommend this book. It explains the atmosphere that leads up to an affair, and it vividly illustrates how an affair SHOULD end. Most affairs don't end this way; instead, they linger on with the spouse having the affair unable to make a decision. All the while, the betrayed spouse and the children suffer tremendously. But there is hope. This book gives a great deal of insight in to the mechanics of the affair, and it describes how the `betrayed' can hang on through the worse experience of their life to eventually come to a point where reconciliation is possible.
The recovery process outlined in this book is also very detailed. Some of it seems `silly' or trivial at times, but it is important and it really can work (I'm in a marriage that is proof of that).
An affair is Hell. This is a roadmap to get back from Hell.

Starred Review. Dewitt's bang-up second novel (after Ablutions) is a quirky and stylish revisionist western. When a frontier baron known as the Commodore orders Charlie and Eli Sisters, his hired gunslingers, to track down and kill a prospector named Herman Kermit Warm, the brothers journey from Oregon to San Francisco, and eventually to Warm's claim in the Sierra foothills, running into a witch, a bear, a dead Indian, a parlor of drunken floozies, and a gang of murderous fur trappers. Eli's deadpan narration is at times strangely funny (as when he discovers dental hygiene, thanks to a frontier dentist dispensing free samples of "tooth powder that produced a minty foam") but maintains the power to stir heartbreak, as with Eli's infatuation with a consumptive hotel bookkeeper. As more of the brothers' story is teased out, Charlie and Eli explore the human implications of many of the clichés of the old west and come off looking less and less like killers and more like traumatized young men. With nods to Charles Portis and Frank Norris, DeWitt has produced a genre-bending frontier saga that is exciting, funny, and, perhaps unexpectedly, moving. (May)

Hired Guns

Where to begin? The Sisters Brothers is without a doubt one of the most original and engaging books I've picked up in awhile. After reading, and thoroughly enjoying Mr. DeWitt's debut novel "Ablutions," I was looking forward to reading this.

"Ablutions" is a brief fantastic story of a barman who works at a downtown LA dive. Told in the second person, it mines similar terrority as Denis Johnson and Bukowski, but with a fresh and inventive narrative. For some reason, I expected "The Sisters Brothers" to be more of the same. Another tale of the down and out, the hopeless and deranged. Patrick DeWitt has grown leaps and bounds since his debut and gives us something unique - a good old fashioned Western that rips along like a horse set loose from the corral for the first time in years.

This novel bends genres and acheives something greater than just being a Western. In fact, the story itself is something universal, it just happens to be set during the early days of the gold rush.

Eli and Charlie Sisters are two hired guns sent to California to kill a man named Hermann Kermit Warm. They don't question why he has to die, they simply follow orders. The journey to find Warm is a large portion of the book and allows us the chance to see how different Eli and Charlie are from each other. Charlie is brutal and selfish, a cold hearted killer with vicious instincts, while Eli is a bit softer, open to the beauty in life - or at least the possibility of finding happiness someday.

Eli narrates the story with thoughtful observations and through him we begin to understand the complicated relationship between the two brothers.

I read this book in a storm over two nights. Novels often fall into two categories, at least as far as reviewers are concerned - the literary, and the genre books. Literary means difficult and serious while genre (mysteries, sci-fi, paranormal, romance etc.) are easy and mindless reads. Of course, this is not always the case but it is a hard stigma to fight. What Mr. DeWitt does is completely ignore whatever classification his novel may be given, and tells us a ripping good story full of humor, violence, and heart. Charlie Sisters knows a little something about the way of the world and how greedy and selfish people are at their core. To find a way to be someone different in the midst of all that is Eli's goal, and Mr. DeWitt takes us right along with him.

I loved this book. I loved the way it was told and the way it made me feel. Highly recommended for anyone and everyone who enjoys great fiction.

A Run-amuck Imagination

This deWitt is someone to watch out for. Liked his first, Abulutions, although I had an acquaitance going through the DTs and rehab just about the time it came out; deWitt was a bit too spot on for me, given the timing. Now here comes a book that...well...how do people come up with this wildly imaginative, unique, witty characters, plotting, tone? The novel is episodic, but hangs together well. There is a bit of archetypal skeleton under the book: quest into new territory by protagonist(s), allowing for new experiences, encounters, growth into self, some moral decisions to be made, and then return in the aftermath. There is a fun-house hall of mirrors similarity here to McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses. This novel is darkly comedic though. I've hit a string of books recently that have had interesting style, but predictable plot...once you get down the literary tricks and style (when I start a book I like to immerse myself into it...read the first 1/3 to 1/2), no need it seems to finish; just read the last couple of pages to confirm what you already suspected. Not here. Great wedding of plot to style to imaginative twists and turns. The book gets even stronger as you go along. One of the highlights of the year so far in reading for me. If deWitt has staying power he'll be his own version of Delillo or Stanley Elkins; I really, really hope this is so.

Funny, Entertaining, But Not for Everyone

The Sisters brothers are a couple of hired killers, not much bothered by pesky scruples, and are employed by a man with even fewer scruples. They are headed to Gold Rush country in the 1850s, sent to kill a thief, no questions asked.

Eli, the less violent of the two, tells us his story, and does it in wonderful, formal language of the times. I really liked Eli despite his considerable shortcomings.

As advertised, this book is filled with some very dark humor and terrific, quirky characters. I really enjoyed reading about the brothers' travails, about Eli's very enthusiastic introduction to toothbrushes and toothpowders, his almost compulsive desire to get rid of his money, and his attempts at romance.

Given that, if you are an animal, you don't want to be anywhere near the Sister brothers - it is a given that things will go horribly wrong. I really, really liked Tub, a long-suffering horse. Don't get me wrong: people don't fare any better, and there is more than enough gruesome description to go around. It's just that I really hate to read about animal cruelty so that unexpected theme made it less enjoyable for me. All in all, if you are very sensitive to reading about bad things happening to good animals even when you know it's fiction, you might want to skip this one. For everyone else, it is a fun, odd, escapist read.
