Not for those without a background

Tried this book as part of my independent studying. It was way over my head as I really had trouble with the practice problems. Unless you have a solid background in proof methodology, induction, sequences/series and advanced algebra (my pre-calc course didn't include these topics), you need not apply for any of Spivak's high level works. I excelled in pre-calculus at a junior college where only 20% passed but have quickly realized that this is no indication one is good at mathematics. Now I'm reconsidering my pursuit of a Bachelors in mathematics. This is no knock on Spivak, I'm just warning you not to purchase the book until you are ready. Fortunately, I bought it new and returned it for a full refund. I wanted to teach math, but now I might pursue something more practical like accounting.

Using this to supplement my Calculus 4th edition I was finally able to understand some of the book. Most of it was problem based learning so having the solutions really helped as I was able to check my answers and make sure I was learning the material right. I would highly recommend.

Essential reading for aspirant masters at visual thinking and communication

The best I've seen yet. This wide-ranging book, in addition to what most other books cover, adds two nifty frameworks that, between them capture the essence of what took me years of experience to master, Firstly, while most other books focus on design execution, Berinato adds the dimension of contextual awareness as an essential element of a good chart, and devotes considerable space to elaborating how to create contextually aware charts. Secondly,his "Four types" framework covers both data driven and conceptual charts, which are not usually treated as related. It also makes a clear distinction between exploratory and explanatory charts, emphasizing how their requirements differ, a distinction which usually goes unappreciated. Hence it unifies, expands and at the same time differentiates the topic of charts in a remarkably useful way.

"Good Charts" has the clarity of thinking that makes it points clearly and simply, without clutter and without oversimplifying - the signature of a master. Highly recommended.

Outstanding Reference and Resource!

Years ago in a development program I was asked to draw something that "represented me." Drawing upon all of my visual, artistic and creative skills ... I drew a single vertical line down the center of the flip chart page. If you can relate, then this book is for you. To be clear, this is not a beginner's guide, per se; many of the example visualizations in the book are quite sophisticated, although the author's use of them to illustrate design points are easy to understand and implement. The beauty of this book is in the author's immensely readable writing style, the system of thinking visually to build better charts that he lays out in the book, and the use of many (many!) examples to make his points. On p. 12 the author states "I hope this book will become a well-worn, dog-eared companion." After just a few weeks my copy is already in that state.

Michael (Mike) Martel helps people get organized, set goals, and achieve more than they ever thought possible.

 

Michael is a retired Special Forces Green Beret. What is a Green Beret? A Green Beret is a member of the United States Special Forces, a special section of the U.S. Army that focuses on Unconventional Warfare. The Green Berets are usually the first ones sent into an area to gather intelligence, help citizens or organize rescue missions. One of the slogans of the Green Berets is "improvise, adapt, and overcome." Mike excelled as a Green Beret because of his ability to think creatively about situations and because of the value he puts on personal productivity.

 

After retiring from the Special Forces, Michael joined the business world in IT Security and Telecommunications. In business, he excelled and noticed that there were several areas of his business that could be improved by applying some of the tactics he learned in Special Forces. Mike restructured work groups and applied many of his lessons of productivity. Since then, Mike has managed business units with budgets of upwards of $70 to $100 million, and they all used many of his Special Forces techniques.

 

Michael has a hands on approach to productivity, which will allow anyone to change their habits, get rid of busy work, and become strategic about the way they accomplish whatever they want!

 

Michael found his military training and skills in getting things done were very relevant and useful in helping people get the results they want in all areas of their business and personal lives. His books, reports, and hot-to guides cover many different areas. He lives with his wife in Washington State, south of Seattle.

A Wonderful Book that Explains How to Train Your Brain

I'm giving this Book 5 Stars because it has actual, practical methods that I've never heard of before for helping me train my brain to accomplish my goals. I especially liked "Risk/Reward". While he doesn't tell you to smoke, in fact just the opposite, but for those like me who like to enjoy a nightly cigar, I utilized his Risk/Reward to my cigar smoking. So I'll only enjoy my cigar if I have completed that day's goals. You can use any reward you want, but this is my motivation. Ok, so back to the review... The author presents a series of actual motifs one can use to bring the two brains together, thus putting you on the right tract for success in whatever your accomplishment you wish to bring into existence. Two other books that use similar ideas of what the author teaches in this book can be found in Millionaire Mind Programming (How to Release your Inner Millionaire) and in "Five Year Life" B008AC6LJY (sorry, no link available yet) Both these books seem to follow the exact same principals and will be good reads for those who enjoy this book.

The author has hit the nail on the head in his description of the two brains including; how to get them to work together to make your desires come true. I liked the concept of the A-team that we all have available to control at will. Most will understand the concepts very quickly but the author has detailed a series of techniques that you can put into play starting right now. You will see the truth in this on it's face and can quickly use these wonderful techniques in your own life with ease. It is an easy read and there is no fluff anywhere in the pages, it's all solid information as he steps us through the process in a logical way that makes sense. Well done, and well written.

Clear and Concise - Outstanding

After a 20 year career in Special Ops to include as a Ranger and Green Beret, I continually try and improve myself. I bought several of Mike's books thinking, "I doubt he can tell me something I don't already know." However, I was very wrong. Mike's books have given me another perspective on life and I look forward to his posts on facebook, twitter, and emails. I highly suggest his books. He gets rid of the fluff most writers have in order to sell a heavier book and gives clear and concise guidance. Everyone needs mentors on their team. I suggest you add Mike as one of them.
